Pre-recorded live stream or YouTube Premiere: which to use
Short answer: Is a YouTube Premiere a live stream? No. A Premiere plays an uploaded video at a set time with a countdown and live chat, but it isn't a live broadcast, and it only shows on YouTube.
YouTube has its own way to show a finished video at a set time: a Premiere. Viewers get a countdown, a watch page they can share before it starts, and a live chat during the first showing. A pre-recorded live stream does something similar from the outside, but it works differently and goes much further than YouTube.
Here's what each one does, from YouTube's own help pages and our own app, and when to pick which.
What a YouTube Premiere is
You upload the video to YouTube Studio, then either set it as an instant Premiere (it starts when processing is done) or schedule it and tick Set as Premiere. A countdown runs before it starts; you pick its theme and length, and it isn't part of the saved video.
The watch page is public before the start, so people can set reminders, chat and see a trailer if you uploaded one. During the Premiere, viewers can rewind but can't skip ahead of the live point. Afterwards it stays on your channel as a normal video and keeps its views.
YouTube's limits: Shorts, 360° and VR180 videos can't be premiered, and a Premiere is shown at up to 1080p.
What a pre-recorded live stream is
A pre-recorded live stream sends the video into a normal live stream, the same way OBS would. To the platform it's a live broadcast, so chat and go-live notifications work as they do for any live stream.
With Multistream, that one video goes to every platform on your list at once: YouTube, Twitch, Kick, Facebook and the rest. You can line up a playlist, loop it, and start it at a set time. On Multistream Cloud it plays from our servers, so your PC can be off.
The differences that matter
Where it shows. A Premiere is YouTube only. A pre-recorded live stream reaches every platform you've added at the same moment, so one launch lands on YouTube, Twitch and Kick together.
One video or many. A Premiere is one video. A live stream can play a playlist of videos in a row, or a loop that starts again at the end.
Countdown and reminders. A Premiere has YouTube's countdown and a public watch page for reminders before it starts. A live stream doesn't show a countdown unless you put one at the start of your video.
What stays afterwards. A Premiere becomes a normal upload with its views. A live stream is saved as a live replay; YouTube's help says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived, so keep very long runs for loops you don't need to keep.
Labels. A Premiere is clearly a Premiere. On a live stream, some platforms ask you to say it's pre-recorded; see how to label a pre-recorded stream.
When to use which
Use a YouTube Premiere for a single new video that lives on YouTube, when the countdown and the shared first viewing are the point.
Use a pre-recorded live stream when you want the video on several platforms at once, when it's a playlist or a loop, when you want go-live notifications to go out, or when you want the platforms' live chat to carry on as usual.
You can also do both: premiere the video on YouTube, and send the same video live to your other platforms at the same hour with Multistream.
How to send a video live everywhere
The short version, with Pro ($10/mo):
- Open Stream a video in the Multistream dashboard or app.
- Add your video. Multistream makes it stream-ready once.
- Pick the platforms as you would for a live stream, and read the pre-stream check.
- Go live Now or At a set time. On Multistream Cloud it starts even with your PC off.
The full walk-through is in how to stream a pre-recorded video live. Multistream's pre-stream check also points out the Premiere option when YouTube is on your list, so you can pick the one that fits.
